Experience

I'm an easygoing and friendly but effective tutor serving the Sacramento Area, who finds helping students reach their aims personally rewarding! I believe that teaching, at its best, is a sharing in truth and therefore that education ought to be a collaborative undertaking, best facilitated not by force-feeding students info but by teaming up with them to engage the subject matter! I began tutoring (mainly philosophy and writing) in 2011 as a senior double major at Azusa Pacific University, having just returned with lots of confidence from studying political and religious philosophy at Oxford University. I have been tutoring in one capacity or another since then, and for the past year in the Sacramento area. In my PhD program at Baylor, I mostly worked as a teaching assistant (grader, discussion leader, auxiliary instructor) and tutor/mentor for lower and upper division humanities courses. In my own academic work, I specialized in ethics, the history of thought, and philosophy of religion. But I’ve always enjoyed languages (my background is in classical languages) and writing itself; so, naturally, I love to teach reading, writing, and grammar skills. Unsurprisingly, I wrote extensively in my PhD program, and this work has sent me to academic conferences across the country and has resulted in several peer-reviewed journal publications. Here are some things that make me unique as a tutor: - My philosophy background makes me well-positioned not only to teach the subject matter but also to inculcate more intangible skills like CRITICAL THINKING, PROBLEM-SOLVING, and overall COMMUNICATION. These capacities are foundational for educational success and really set you apart for after-school work life. - I pride myself on my ability to provide CAREFUL EXPLANATION of even the most difficult concepts with simple, down-to-earth examples or references. - We all learn in our own ways and at our own paces. (Are you a visual or aural learner? Communicative or reflective?) I try my best to remain SENSITIVE to different learning styles and paces. - To date in my tutoring career, I have not failed in helping students (including failing students) achieve B QUALITY work OR HIGHER. I’m confident that, with some effort on your part, I can do the same for you! - Careful GOAL SETTING is an important boost to student progress. I share with regular clients my personal tried-and-true system, which has led to my own academic success, of setting concrete, achievable, and measurable goals and considering identifiable steps to reach them. A session will typically incorporate one or more of these steps toward an academic goal. - Structured but FLEXIBLE. While I do set and communicate lesson objectives at the start of each session, they’re never set in stone (neither are student goals). I take students’ vision into account in determining what’s most important for immediate and long-term development. The PhD work is currently on hold and I've been really enjoying serving students outside the university setting in the role of tutor. I can't wait to do everything in my power to meet your needs!
